With the Liberal Party's results in last night’s election, we have quite a mixed message in Guelph. Liberals have been given a pretty clear mandate here, with 6,600 more voting for Liberal this time around, and the most Liberal votes in the last 4 elections. The big shift was Green to Liberal, with almost exactly the same numbers voting this time around (58,963 in 2011 vs 58,889 in 2008). It will be a very different session this time around with the NDP as our official opposition. The reduction of the Bloc in Quebec is good news for federal politics. The economic agenda will be clear now, hopefully with the emphasis on tax reduction and increasing productivity through innovation as well as opening the border with the USA and free trade with the EU and India on the agenda. It was disappointing our numbers voting were about the same as last election. Hopefully the next 4 years will see a recovery in public participation. It will be up to Ottawa to regain voter interest through more transparency and constructive debate. The Canadian Chamber reaction will be posted later today. www.chamber.ca
